Questions & Answers
1) What can I expect my first time?
Our host will guide you through every step to ensure that you feel relaxed and comfortable. You’ll fill out a health questionnaire and waiver, and the host will thoroughly explain it all to you, as well as address any questions or concerns that you may have.
Then you’ll prepare for your float. That includes putting in ear plugs, showering with spa-provided shampoo and body wash (no conditioner), and applying petroleum jelly to any superficial cuts or scrapes so that the salt does not cause stinging. Then you get in and float.
Once your time is up, the light will automatically turn on in the cabin along with gradual music so you know that it’s time for you to get out. As you carefully get out of the cabin, a motion sensor will turn the lights on in the room. The float tank room is equipped with a private shower, as well as shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. We also provide vinegar so that you can use it with water to clean any salt residue out of your ears. Additionally, we provide body lotion, and you can fix your hair and makeup in our private bathrooms.
2) Is there anything I should (or shouldn’t) do in advance to prepare for my float?
We do recommend avoiding caffeine prior to floating, if possible. (We know, we probably love coffee as much as you do!) But avoiding caffeine can help you enter a much more relaxed state during your session. You should also avoid shaving prior to floating since the saltwater can sting freshly-shaved skin. And if you’ve recently colored your hair, then make sure that the colour is no longer washing out before you float.
We also recommend that you eat a light meal a couple hours before your float. If you’re really full or really hungry, then you may not be able to relax as deeply. And you should be well hydrated too (just be sure to use the washroom before your float).
3) Do I need to bring anything with me?
There is no need to bring anything; we provide everything that you need to enjoy your float. However, you can bring personal items for after your float, such as makeup, perfume, etc.
4) Do I wear clothing in the float tank?
No. Floating is done naked, and you don’t need to worry because your private room will be locked during your float session.
5) Should I wear ear plugs?
We provide ear plugs and highly recommend that you use them. The ear plugs are comfortable, easy to mold, and fit nicely for everyone.
6) How are the float tanks kept clean? Is the water changed after every float?
Our float tanks have a unique cleaning system. The water circulates through a pump filtration system three times during a 20-minute cycle between every float. That means that the entire cabin of water runs through the filtration system. Additionally, we have a built-in UV light, H2O2, and Ozone system. In addition to our filtration and cleaning systems, we also check the water for any hair or particles and wipe the cabin as needed between every float. We also clean the showers and tank handles between every float.
7) What are Epsom salts and why are they used?
Epsom salts are rich in magnesium. Magnesium is an essential element for the human body and adequate amounts are not commonly obtained from diet alone. So you can take magnesium as a supplement or you can soak in Epsom salts and absorb magnesium through your skin. Soaking in Epsom salts helps your body detoxify and can also help relieve sore muscles, joints, and injuries.
8) Is the salt hard on my skin or hair?
The salt isn’t hard on your skin or hair at all. In fact, people who float on a regular basis often find that the condition of their skin improves.
9) How long does a float session last?
Our floats are 90 minutes long.
10) How will I know when my time is up?
At the end of your float session, the cabin lights turn on automatically and soft, gradual music will start to play.
11) Will my skin be wrinkled after floating for that long?
No. Because of the Epsom salts in the water, your body’s salt is not drawn out of your skin like it is when you take a long bath.
12) How does fresh air get into the float tank?
The cabin is equipped with two fresh air intakes.
13) Does the water get cold during my float?
No. The water temperature is regulated extremely accurately. The water temperature is kept at 93.5 degrees Fahrenheit so that it’s as close to average body temperature as possible.
14) How often can a person float?
As often as you want! We recommend a consistent floating practice in order to get the best results.
15) Are there any health conditions that would restrict me from floating?
You cannot float if you have open wounds. And if you have any other medical conditions, then you should speak with your family physician to ensure that floating is appropriate for you.
16) Are float tanks safe to use during pregnancy or menstruation?
Yes. Just use the same practices as you would if you were going to the swimming pool.
17) Can children use float tanks?
Yes. Children are welcome to float at Calm Lake Float with their parents’ permission and a signed waiver.
18) I experience claustrophobia; is that going to be a concern for me in the float tank?
It’s highly unlikely! The tanks are actually quite huge and you may and you may sit up, raise your hands, and remove yourself at anytime. Most people enter such a deep state of relaxation that they forget they’re even inside a cabin.
19) I have trouble floating in pools, lakes, etc.; will I sink in the float tank?
No. In fact, we guarantee that you’ll float! More than 1,000 pounds of Epsom salts will keep you buoyant.
20) How might I feel after a float session?
Every person can have a different experience. You may feel energetic and have a clear mind. Or you may feel relaxed and ready for a nap. You may have some emotions arise, which is completely normal as well. You might feel like having some tea and journaling afterward. Regardless of your experience, we’re here for you after your float.
